THE best of Herefordshire's perry pear orchards were on show during a recent one-day study event organised by the Orchard Network of Excellence (ONE).
A group of 30 fruit growers toured local farms and found out more about the pros and cons of growing perry pears – which have a reputation for being slow growers "to grow for your heirs".
The event included visits to a range of different aged orchards, from 200-year-old trees to two-year-old modern bush orchards, which are already cropping quality fruit.
The tour included a stop at award winning cider and perry maker, Tom Oliver at Ocle Pychard, to learn more about the process of making perry and hear advice on the best varieties to grow to create great tasting perry.
