WITH rural crime on the rise nationwide the “innovative” Stop The Thief campaign in Kington has been shortlisted for an award for thwarting criminals.

Based on research that shows burgled farms are more likely to be targeted again, the Stop The Thief initiative allows farmers to trial anti-theft systems for three weeks, before deciding whether to purchase or return it.

Last week the scheme’s success was recognised by the Nation Farmers Union Mutual, and has been nominated for its South West Crime Fighters Award.

“Many thefts have been thwarted as a result,” said regional judge, NFU Mutual’s Alan Milstead.

“I have been amazed by the sheer level of innovation of this year’s candidates.

“The dedication to help reduce rural crime is inspirational and I commend their efforts to help raise awareness of this plight and bring people to justice.”

The cost of rural crime across the UK rose to £44.5m, with the theft of high-end tractors, tools and machinery for export on the rise.

The winner of the national Crime Fighters award will be announced at a ceremony in London next month, and will be given £1,500 to help support the reduction of rural crime.
