WHEN she dropped an unstamped birthday card in Hereford without realising, Liz Pitman simply replaced it and sent another.

But she was delighted – and not surprised – when the original found its way more than 10,000 miles to her great niece, Daisy Sutton, in Sydney, in time for her first birthday.

It was thanks to the kindness of a stranger who had found the card and sent it on its onward journey down under.

"Yet again Hereford people have proved their kindness and generosity," said Mrs Pitman.

She had written the card out ready to send in early September – ahead of Daisy’s birthday which was earlier this week – but lost it in the city en-route to the post office.

And the 74-year-old, who works at Hereford Cathedral library, said that there have been a number of occasions when she has been overwhelmed with the generosity and kindness of people in the county since moving here seven years ago.

“I would say that about two or three times, really good things have happened to me in Hereford. I sent my niece an email to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if they received two cards which is exactly what happened," she said.

“She was just amazed – they thought it was brilliant," said Mrs Pitman.

“So please can I thank the person who picked up, stamped and posted a letter to Daisy Sutton in Sydney."
