A CRAFT centre housed in an old railway station on the banks of the Wye will close its doors after 30 years this Christmas.

Since Alan and Erika Cunningham transformed the derelict Erwood Station near – near Hay-on-Wye – into a quirky craft centre, it has been become a popular tourist attraction.

Since 1984 the station, complete with a restored 1939 Fowler locomotive, has been home to many exhibitions from artists and craftsmen – as well as a few feathered friends, which can be viewed from an old signal box, converted into a bird hide.

However the station is now looking for new tenants, with the Cunningham’s son Michael, who now manages the venue, heading off to pursue his passion for conservation by volunteering abroad.

He said: “I wish to thank all visitors for their custom, and volunteers and staff for all their hard work.

“Many local farmers, businesses, suppliers and musicians have helped since our inception in 1984, and for events like Summer Craft Festival - we could not have done it without you.

“Thank you for the commitment of all the friends and artists who have helped me carry on my father’s venture.”

Erwood Station Craft Centre will be closed from December 24, however Mr Cunningham is planning a big run-in for the centres final Christmas.

There will be late-night shopping at the station on two Fridays, December 12 and 19, with both the cafe and craft centre staying open until 8pm for those looking to pick up some last-minute handmade gifts.
