A LORRY crashed into a railway bridge on Tolladine Road, Worcester, this morning.

The collision at about 11.45am forced the road to be closed and caused disruption to train journeys.

Bricks from the structure were left on the carriageway but luckily no-one was injured.

Network Rail closed the bridge from 11.45am to 1.50pm as a safety precaution.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "A lorry did indeed damage the bridge.

"We had to close it so a specialist could go to the site and establish the extent of the repairs needed and whether it was safe to re-open.

"Fortunately, we were able to divert a large number of services during this time.

"Our specialist was happy for the bridge to be re-opened, but some repair work is needed that will be undertaken by our structures team, following the receipt of the specialist’s report."

Driver Russell Haywood said: I had to swerve past bricks on road and police had blocked by the lights to stop traffic going up Tolly Road."

Another driver, Claire Shacklock, said: "I drove past at 11.35am, and the pile of bricks were there and I had to swerve round them."

During the incident, West Mercia Police closed Tolladine Road from 12.45pm to 1.45pm, while Worcestershire County Council's staff were also on-hand to set up diversion signs.

Neither firefighters nor ambulance staff were called to the incident.
