WORCESTERSHIRE Forum Against Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence has pledged its support to an international event that aims to end violence against women.

The 16 Days of Action campaign was launched globally yesterday (Tuesday, November 25) and will run until Wednesday, December 10.

A local launch, which took place at the University of Worcester, featured a debate about the proposed Domestic Violence Bill.

Martin Lakeman, strategic co-ordinator at the forum, said: “It’s an important campaign as it helps to highlight what can be done to tackle violence against men, women and children at a local level, supported by events and activities throughout the world.

“We are heartened by the level of support and interest that The 16 Days of Action campaign receives locally.

“We work hard all year round to raise awareness of the misery that domestic abuse and sexual violence causes to families throughout Worcestershire; however an event such as this really helps bring it to the forefront of people’s minds.

“Raising awareness of what is so often a hidden issue is vital in addressing and ultimately overcoming abuse.

“The message is simple, do not suffer in silence.”

The forum is also asking people to take the Worcestershire Pledge and say no to to domestic abuse and sexual violence.

It is aiming for 10,000 pledges, which can be made at whiteribboncampaign.co.uk/worcestershire

Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for health and well-being at Worcestershire County Council, which is supporting the initiative, said: "I would urge as many people as possible to get behind this campaign.

“I for one am always touched by the level of support and interest the people of Worcestershire give this most deserving of causes.”
