A SPECIAL medal ceremony in Worcester has recognised the bravery of 36 veterans during the Second World War.

The heroes were awarded the Ushakov Medal for their roles in the Arctic Convoys, delivering essential supplies to the Soviet Union.

Worcestershire County Council organised the event, which took place on Monday (November 24), in partnership with the Embassy of the Russian Federation.

One veteran at the ceremony said Russia might not have existed today if they hadn’t transported the cargo, while another added it was an honour and privilege to receive recognition from the embassy.

The latter however was modest about his achievements, stating “we are not the heroes, we were just doing our job”.

Councillor Pam Davey, chairman of the county council, gave a welcome address at the event, while Sergey Nalobin, counsellor of the Russian Embassy, presented the medals.

Cllr Davey added: “It was a very special day to honour these World War Two veterans and recognise their bravery and commitment.

“As chair of Worcestershire County Council it was a great privilege for me to welcome these special guests and hear their memories first hand."
