A NEW community interest club based in Hereford is offering a novel approach to help get children involved in sport.

Wye Ventures, launched by Michaela da Cunha, is pitched as being dedicated to promoting happy and active lifestyles in families and community groups across the United Kingdom.

It is coupling the concepts of mindfulness and wellbeing with keeping physically fit through its innovative ParkourO programme.

The programme combines two military derived exercises – Parkour obstacle training and orienteering navigation training.

Ms da Cunha, who previously helped run Club Fever in Ross-on-Wye, said: "We realised that a child's experience pre-12 really determined what they do as an adult.

"Kids love gymnastics but they don't like standing in a queue waiting for someone to say 'it's your turn' and I saw this so we really offer a free-for-all gymnastics."

Children currently go to Hereford Leisure Centre on a Thursday and are given their own personal challenges.

Challenges take place in outdoor ‘gyms’ in parks, woodland and forests and there is also the chance for children to take part in organised competitions and events.

"It's a completely safe environment because with orienteering events there's stringent health and safety regulations so it's a very safe place for a child to learn these life skills," added Ms da Cunha.

"We are also working with Mind, the mental health charity. We have done a lot of research, we are going into schools and doing inspirational assemblies."

Two coaches, including level two coach Craig Robinson lead the Parkour sessions.

Wye Ventures is looking to launch its ParkourO scheme more widely from September.

And while the concept of Parkour might be a concern for some parents, Ms da Cunha is urging them to research the sport.

"If they want to meet up with us we are really happy to discuss anything with any parent with concerns because whilst we do this we teach children respect for their environment and respect for how they use things," she said.

"We talk about risk benefits rather than risks. It is not just about physical stuff it's about helping children to become mentally and physically stronger through the ParkourO."

Wye Ventures will be at the River Carnival in Hereford this weekend and the company is happy to speak to anyone interested in finding out more. Parkour coach, Craig Robinson, will also be attending.
