IT'S OFFICIAL, a 68 year old marathon runner from Ledbury has been crowned as the UK’s most Over Active Pensioner.

Phillip Howells was selected for the coveted title in a public vote that saw him go up against a Himalayan mountain trekker, a transatlantic sailor, a Cornish triathlete and a scuba-diving supergran.

Despite tough competition, sprightly Mr Howells pipped the other finalists to the finishing post as a result of his impressive array of physical achievements, which include running 167 marathons to date, towards a lifetime target of 333.

The New Mills resident said, said: “I entered the Senior Railcard competition to try and show the public that over 60s can lead just as healthy and active lifestyles as the younger generation. I’ve always been a fitness enthusiast – it’s a huge part of my life, not only because I enjoy it, but also because I know that as I get older remaining active is proven to enhance quality of life.

He added: "I hope that my story will inspire others to keep active, get out and about and enjoy life, no matter what their age.

“I’ve been completely overwhelmed with the fantastic response from the public, especially from my local community and fellow runners. The support has been truly phenomenal and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me to win.”

A recent back operation and diagnosis with heart condition has done little to slow Mr Howells down, and he has a further ten marathons planned for this year alone. He also hopes to compete in an ultra-triathlon Ironman event by the time he is 70.

Mr Howells was one of five finalists shortlisted in the competition by Senior Railcard

Andrew Robertson, from Senior Railcard, said: “Phillip was always a strong contender for the title of the UK’s most Over Active Pensioner, so it’s no surprise that the public have got behind him and voted for him to win the competition.

“We would like to thank Phillip, and the other finalists, for taking part in the competition and hope their stories show others that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.”

As well as taking home the prestigious title, Mr Howells will also win £600 worth of Virgin Experience vouchers to put towards his next active pursuit.
