TURTLE conservation is the subject of a book which was written and illustrated by a year 13 Hereford student.

Henry Vowles, a Hereford Cathedral sixth former, was inspired to create the children's book after his time spent in Mexico working on Operation Wallacea.

During his trip last summer he collected data on the impact of tourism on the population of the green sea turtles along the Yucatan peninsula.

Mr Vowles, aged 18, completed the book for his Extended Project Qualification- a qualification which is equivalent to an A level.

He aims to educate children on how artificial lights can confuse and prevent newly hatched turtles from managing the challenging journey to the sea and therefore surviving.

As part of his research he contacted primary school headteachers to produce an online survey for parents.

Mr Vowles used the survey results and feedback from experts in the field to select the target age group of four to five.

He has also set up and designed his own website and publishing company called Salty Brine, and now wants to turn it into an e-book.
