LEOMINSTER is looking blooming marvellous now its new nutgrove and flowerbeds are blossoming thanks to funding from a county business.

Run by a group of volunteers with the aim of making their town a more pleasant place to live, Leominster in Bloom put forward an application to the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust to enable them to encourage biodiversity in the area through the planting of trees and flowers.

The trust helped by providing funding for the planting of a nutgrove and flowerbeds as encouraging biodiversity is one of its aims.

Gill Ding, a member of Leominster in Bloom and organiser of this project, said: "We were lucky enough to receive nearly £5,000 from the Kingspan Insulation Community trust which we have put to good use in not only encouraging biodiversity in the parish but has also brought the community together by getting different groups involved with the planting.

"This involvement has helped give people a sense of pride in the area they live, and will hopefully encourage similar activities in the future."

The money was used to buy the necessary planting equipment to create and maintain a grove of native nut trees at the Sydonia park area, and the beds were specifically designed to be planted at the welcome points to the town.

Designed by local landscape architect, Penny Usher, the nutgrove features a single chestnut tree which pays tribute to former mayor, Roger Hunt, who died in May last year.

Local children were also invited to help with the design and layout and many flower beds have been created throughout the parish where specially selected species of plants were chosen for the benefits they offer.

The Kingspan Insulation Community Trust provides funding to projects within the catchment areas of Wigmore High School, Lady Hawkins’ School, Earl Mortimer College and Tenbury High School in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
