A MAN who was appointed as the first paediatrician at Hereford County Hospital has died aged 95.
Hugh Fisher moved to Herefordshire to take up the role in 1951 after completing his training at St Thomas's Hospital in London.
After retiring, he went to Brunei for a year with his wife, Beryl, to take up a post as paediatrician at the hospital in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.
They then went to live in Australia, first in Perth and later in Melbourne before finally taking up residence in the retirement village in Williamstown.
Described by his family as a 'very caring father who worried more about his children than himself', Mr Fisher loved the outdoors and his favourite hobbies were salmon
fishing, bird-watching and bridge. He also enjoyed history and poetry.
A light-hearted mural is in place in Hereford County Hospital's children's ward where he is depicted in a boat with a fishing rod wearing an Australian hat trimmed with corks.
Dr Fisher died peacefully on June 15 in Williamstown, Victoria, after a short illness.
He was predeceased by both his sons and his wife died last year. He is survived by his two daughters, Charlotte and Judith.
