A FLAG designed by children at a North Herefordshire primary school to represent their community went on display at Westminster.

Designed by pupils at Luston Primary School, the flag was one of 80 to fly in Parliament Square as part of the 2015 Flag Project, run by the Houses of Parliament.

It aimed to connect young people with the democratic process and the UK’s parliamentary heritage.

To mark the Montfort parliament anniversary, where elected representatives of the shires and the boroughs came together for the first time, primary schools in every constituency were asked to create a flag that represents their area or community.

Luston pupils worked together to create a design to reflect how they see North Herefordshire, using traditional flag making rules about colours, shapes and emblems.

The year-five and year-six pupils of Redwood Class were involved in the project and invited MP Bill Wiggin to the school to talk about the special qualities of his constituency.

The pupils decided that an image of a black and white house, a Hereford bull and an apple tree were representative of the area.

The images were worked in black and white and presented on a green background to represent the rural nature of the constituency. They were 'thrilled' that their design was chosen to be sewn into a full ceremonial size flag and was flown in parliament Square for all to see.

Meanwhile, more than £1,000 was raised for the school's nursery following a pop-up restaurant.

The event was held by Lizzy Davies and her team to help pay for some new equipment for the nursery.

A total of 90 people sat down to enjoy a restaurant quality meal at Cawley Hall and tucked into the likes of roast beef with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and parsnips accompanied by peas, carrots and cheesy leeks – all cooked on site, voluntarily, by experienced caterers.

Nursery children will now benefit from a specially designed piece of equipment to enable them to have a ‘walking bus’ and explore the village of Luston and an outdoor play area will also be developed.
