MORE than 4,000 signatures have been gathered opposing the proposed closure of Ross-on-Wye library.

Since Herefordshire Council announced it would look at the possibility of closing the library in Cantilupe Road, as well as Belmont and Leominster, the Ross Library Development Group has been gathering signatures both online and in the town.

They were in the centre of Ross on Thursday and collected 589 signatures which takes the total to 4,250.

Clare West, from the development group, said: "It is extremely encouraging. People are just outraged at even the idea of closing it.

"It isn't just for the town- it serves the whole of south Herefordshire."

Mrs West said people are even coming from Hereford at the moment because the library there is closed due to asbestos.

She added: "It is such a basic facility in a town that hasn't got an enormous amount. It is the centre for so much."

The Herefordshire Council Priorities and Budget consultation runs until October 9, which is when the group will hand in their petition.
