RARE footage filmed at a youth camp in Dinedor in the 60s has been uncovered by the British Deaf Association.

The national association has combined footage found in its archive, which was filmed across the UK and dating back to the 30s, into a 70 minute documentary.

The long-lost film was found by builders in 2004 and was converted into new digitised footage before being made into a documentary called Power in our Hands.

It explores the secret history and heritage of the deaf community in the UK and combines social history and archive film with contemporary interviews.

The BDA archive includes footage taken at Herefordshire Youth Camp and Training Centre, now Dinedor Outdoor Centre, in 1966.

Dr Terry Riley OBE, chair of the British Deaf Association, said: β€œTo see this old film footage is an emotional occasion for me.

"For many years, I never really knew or saw my language on screen. So to be able to sit down and see BSL on a par with any other language is a wonderful thing. "

The film explores the recognition of British Sign Language (BSL) and deaf rights in the UK.

He added: "This film will give the deaf community a feeling of history and sense of pride knowing BSL has been around for hundreds of years.” The film is being shown at participating venues across the country including The Courtyard in Hereford, on Tuesday, March 29 at 6pm.
