BEACONS are to be lit across Herefordshire to mark The Queen's birthday today.

The Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire will be lighting a beacon in Churchill Gardens in Hereford at 7.30 tonight. 

The event is organised by Hereford City Council and mayor of Hereford, Councillor Charles Nicholls said anyone is welcome to come along to the celebration. 

There will be some refreshments and apart from lighting the beacon we will be singing the National Anthem together to say Happy Birthday to her majesty.

Over 1,000 beacons are being lit in the UK today as part of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday celebrations.

Ross-on-Wye Town Council is marking the occasion by lighting the beacon on the Prospect.

Their beacon will be lit at 8pm and the ceremony which will begin with music from 7.30pm.

There will also be birthday cake available.

Kington will also join in with the birthday celebrations and their beacon is being lit at 8.30pm on Bradnor Hill, with the permission of Kington Golf Club.

The Queen's actual birthday is today but the country will celebrate her birthday on June 10.

There will also be beacons lit between 7.30pm and 8.30pm at Croft Birch Common (near Leominster) Burnt Mills Farm (Docklow), Brimfield (near Ludlow), Westhope (near Leominster), Shortwood Farm (near Bromyard) and Churchill Gardens (top of Aylestone Hill, Hereford).
