A MAN who had walked from Leominster to Hereford following a night out was then arrested by police for being drunk and disorderly.

Matthew Barnett, 26, of Eastholme Avenue, Belmont said he had been out on June 16 to watch the England vs Wales match in Hereford with his dad and dad's best friend.

He told Hereford Magistrates Court he had been encouraged to drink alcohol and found himself at a travellers' site in Leominster at midnight.

But he said he had to start work for Balfour Beatty, where he is an apprentice, at 4am so he decided to walk back to Hereford.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said it was at 3.20am when two police officers saw Barnett swearing and was unsteady on his feet in Belmont Road.

The officers stopped and said Barnett swore at them. They told him to go home and as they went to walk away Barnett made an offensive comment and he was arrested.

Barnett said he would not have sworn at the officers and had cursed at the roadside because he realised he had left his phone behind.

He pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place. Magistrates fined him £65 and ordered him to pay £50 towards costs and a victim surcharge of £30.
