A COUPLE who met on the tram before falling in love despite spending long periods apart celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last weekend.

Ron and Ann Morgan, from Hereford, celebrated 60 years of marriage on Saturday, but if it wasn't for a chance meeting in Cardiff they may have never met.

"I was at sea most of my life and was in Cardiff taking my navy examinations," said Ron.

"I saw this young lady at the tram station and thought I am definitely getting on the same tram as her. Luckily she was getting the same tram as me and I was staying near to where Ann lived.

"Two days after meeting her I asked her to marry me and we got married two years later in Cardiff. Our marriage was slightly delayed as I had very short leaves and long trips away in the navy.

"Coincidentally our first date was also on October 8, and we went for a walk before I took her to the pub.

Ron added that the secret to being married for 60 years is not arguing and seeing the funny side of life.

He added: "We have been married 60 years because we've never wanted to hurt each other and have honestly never quarrelled.

"We were apart for long periods of six or 12 months so didn't want to waste the time we had together quarrelling and there was no point regretting arguments if I was thousands of miles away.

"We have always had patience and enjoyed each others company and I think a good sense of humour is also important.

"We have had the usual family problems but always manage to see the funny side of life."

The couple lived in Cardiff before moving back to Ron's home town of Hereford, where they have lived for 55 years.

Ron was in the navy for 48 years and used to take his wife and two children Susan and David on many of his trips abroad.

"We went to Japan and New Zealand and various other places," added Ron.

"In those days the education authority were a little more flexible and considered the trips at sea as educational."
