A LEOMINSTER walking group is ‘striding ahead’ with its plan to make walking activities a key part of the town’s appeal, a meeting heard.

Members of the town's Walkers are Welcome group celebrated an active year aimed at encouraging visitors to enjoy the outdoors and local heritage features, supporting the local economy, maintaining footpaths and improving access at their recent AGM.

Chairman Jenny Williams said in her report the group had formed good links with Leominster Country Tourism, the Ramblers, local bus user groups, history and other interest groups.

Walkers are Welcome provided guided walks for local events including Leominster Festival, the town’s Medieval Fair, Apple Fair, Food Fair and celebrations for St Edfrith, founder of Leominster as a monastic settlement.

The group also led walks for Herefordshire Walking Festival, a Quaker Family Heritage Society seminar, National Tree Week and for visitors, including those from many different countries.

Dennis Downey, footpath warden for the Town Council, leads a regular Walking for Health group and has established an active Nordic walking group.
