A HEREFORD mum believes that energy-saving streetlights are not bright enough on the main roads.

Jacqui Cody lived in Cardiff for 15 years before returning to Hereford to live in Ledbury Road and was shocked at the poorly-lit streets.

She said: “When I came back to Hereford, I couldn’t believe how poorly lit Ledbury Road is. I know the LED lights are energy saving and I am all for being green.

“But the lighting seems so poor it is as if we are living in the countryside.

It is a main road into Hereford.”

Jacqui said that just before Christmas she saw an elderly couple get knocked down when they were crossing Ledbury Road in foggy conditions in the early evening opposite the Rose and Crown pub.

She said the driver was not driving fast so luckily the couple did not sustain any injuries.

She added: “I don’t think it is so much the actual lights but I don’t think there are enough of them.”

A Herefordshire Council spokesman said: “The council is concerned regarding any reports of accidents on the highway and would welcome any further details so that this can be investigated to determine whether any action is required to prevent accidents in future.

“Without this we would not be able to comment on the causes of this specific case.”

The LED streetlights have been gradually installed across the county in recent years and will save £17 million and 29,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 20 years.

The council spokesman added: “The new LED street lights provide a better quality, white light on the highway which enables much clearer colour recognition.

The LEDs also provide much better visibility during murky/foggy weather as the lighting is more penetrating than the older non-LED lights.”
