A £10,000 grant will help a community group discover what residents would like to see on Castle Green in Hereford.

The Friends of Castle Green applied for the money through a lengthy application process with Awards for All (Big Lottery Fund).

The group is committed to respecting the heritage of the city centre open space and want to ensure it is improved and protected for future generations.

The grant money will therefore fund a city-wide consultation that will take place throughout 2017, starting with a project promotion day on February 11 in High Town.

This will be followed by 14 World Cafe events, which will facilitate small group discussions on the challenges, risks and opportunities for the future of Castle Green.

In addition, three Planning for Real consultations will coincide with large, open-air and free-to-attend public events on Castle Green; Hereford River Carnival (April 29), Friends of Castle Green Summer Fair (July 1) and the Herefordshire Country Fair on the Bishop's Meadow (August 6).

Friends of Castle Green will then analyse the results of the consultation and publish a report of the findings.

This report will form the basis of detailed representations to Herefordshire Council’s Forward Planning Team to include the findings in the Hereford Area Plan.

Amanda Attfield, chair of Friends of Castle Green, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this project funding. We are poised to take over the Pavilion from the council and this project will help us plan for the long term future of the Pavilion and the Castle Green.

"As part of this we want to develop community business models that will help create sustainable long term income for the area so that the park can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come."
