THE bandstand area in a market town could be improved thanks to the help of the Lions Club.

The Ross-on-Wye club is proposing a centenary legacy project at the bandstand by the River Wye in the town.

Keith Wilding, from the club, said the club funded and built the bandstand, which sees bands play there every Sunday throughout the summer months.

He said recognising the association with the area, the club thought they could not only continue to enhance the area but also give Lions a legacy for their centenary year.

He said they were putting forward four separate projects.

The first was to provide electricity to the bandstand, via the nearby public toilets. The second was to install fixed poles which seven large sail shades could be fixed to, which would provide cover for people watching music at the bandstand.

The third was a noticeboard and plan of Ross-on-Wye and finally the fourth suggestion was to install a 4ft6in high lion on a concrete plinth.

Ross town councillors said they liked the sound of the proposals but said removable posts could be considered as the town council could store them.

Cllr Chris Bartrum said: "I am sure I speak for the rest of the council when I thank the Lions for coming here tonight to take the time to bother, not least because it can get rather boring. It is nice to see passionate members of the public and incredibly members of the public who want to enhance areas we own and they even want to pay for it."

The town councillors agreed to support the projects in principle.
