A CEMETERY which is running out of burial space could be extended.

The plans for an extension to Leominster Cemetery have been submitted by Herefordshire Council which states that, should permission for the scheme be granted, the land could provide 1,209 burial spaces.

It would enable provision for a further 90 years.

The Hereford Times reported in 2015 how the cemetery, on Hereford Road, was running out of burial space, with estimates at that time pointing to the site being full within two years.

An investigation into the soil condition and drainage status of land designated for an extension has now been carried out by TGMS Ltd.

The Environment Agency has said it has no objection to the proposal but has provided a number of conditions for the council's consideration.

The land required for change of use – to extend the site – is within the curtilage of the existing cemetery and was left unattended until 2016 when it was cleared in preparation

for the soil condition and drainage status report.

The application states that access roadways will be created from the existing cemetery.

A target determination date for the application has been given as Friday, April 7.
