THE police force that serves Herefordshire has been assessed as 'good' in three key areas following a rigorous inspection.

The inspection reports looked at the external activity and internal operations of West Mercia Police (WMP) and released the findings in a PEEL report from Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC).

The inspection regime examined the forces operations across three key areas of:

• Effectiveness - keeping people safe and reducing crime

• Efficiency - providing value for money

• Legitimacy - treating people with fairness and respect

All three were assessed as 'good'.

West Mercia Police Chief Constable Anthony Bangham said: "I welcome the HMIC's inspection reports and I am pleased to see highlighted areas of work which continuously protect people from harm and address criminal activity.

"I am pleased the findings reflect the hard work and commitment demonstrated by officers, volunteers and staff in helping to protect our communities and to achieve our aspiration of being great at protecting the most vulnerable.

"However, we are not complacent. We will continue to strive for excellence across all areas of activity, working in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner, the communities we serve and other neighbouring forces."
