THE Kingsland community really came together to raise money to buy a patch of land to turn into their village green.
The land in the village was up for sale for £350,000 and threatened with development.
Villagers were determined not to let it go and even the Prince of Wales helped by donating a set of table mats he designed for the Highgrove collection for their auction.
After a successful campaign they bought the land and named it The Millennium Green.
To celebrate and mark the opening of its green in July 1999 they held a Flair ‘99 event.
The photo shows Kingsland school pupils practising for the procession.
When hundreds had gathered for the occasion the Shire horse, named after the former Prime Minister, John Major, started to run around the village green without warning.
John Major’s owner, Peter Banks, was injured as he tried to get the horse under control.
Mr Banks was taken away in an ambulance.
But his wife, Angela, confirmed the next week that Mr Banks was fine.
She said John Major had suffered from “a slight bit of misbehaviour.”
