YOUNG artists are being asked to create a piece of work inspired by the life and work of the Herefordshire artist Brian Hatton.

Hereford College of Arts is holding The Brian Hatton Young Artist competition which is open to anyone aged five to 16, with prizes of up to £750 to be awarded to schools and category winners.

The college welcomes all 2D art entries, including painting, drawing, illustration, collage and print, and artists are encouraged to draw upon the life and work of Mr Hatton as an inspiration.

Schools can find study materials about Mr Hatton online at www.brianhatton.herefordshire.gov.uk.

During his life, he created over 1,000 art works including oil paintings, watercolours, and pencil and pastel drawings.

Ed Hatton, a relative of the late artist, said: "So many of the exhibitions and events around Brian's work tend to be quite formal. The Edwardian period appears to have been a time of great fun and I think to engage the next generation things need to be light-hearted and modernised."

Entries can be sent via post or dropped off to: Young Artist Competition, Hereford College of Arts, Folly Lane, Hereford, HR1 1LT, and the deadline is June 5. Entries will be displayed at the Brian Hatton Young Artists Award Exhibition at the Folly Lane Campus from July 13 to 26, with awards and a private viewing on July 12.
