THE new Mayor of Leominster says he hopes to engage younger people in local democracy.

Councillor Roger Pendleton formally became the town's new mayor following a ceremony held at Grange Court.

He takes over from his wife, Cllr Angela Pendleton, who will be his mayoress for the year.

He said: "I feel the last year has been a sort of apprenticeship - but it has helped me to understand the role of the mayor – and also to experience the huge reservoir of talent and unselfish help available in Leominster.

"My emphasis this year will be the young people of Leominster and as part of this end my charity will be the Janet and Peter McCaull trust.

"Peter made a huge contribution to the development of Leominster over 40 years and four Mayorships.

"One of the features I have noticed on attending many civic and other events is that - with the exception of the cadets - there is a lack of engagement by young people in civic affairs – I will try to do something to change this. I have a few ideas.

"In summary I promise to always to do my best - in all activities - to promote the town, businesses, people and youth of Leominster."
