A VILLAGE in the south of Herefordshire came together to support this year's Royal British Legion county rally, hosted by one of the smaller branches.

St Weonards and District organised the annual event this year and held it in the nearby village of Llanwarne on Saturday.

The formal part of the rally began with an act of remembrance at the war memorial, followed by a service of commemoration in Christ Church at 3pm.

Bea Morris, branch secretary for St Weonards and District, said: "It was absolutely brilliant and the marching band and everything was good. I think the pièce de résistance was the bugler on the tower of the ruined church and the two pipers up there and they played three laments. It was really just amazing."

After the church service, the salute was taken by Christopher James, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire.

The parade of county standards and veterans was led by the Northfield Caledonia Pipes and Drums.

Teas were served in the village hall instead of the ruined church of St John the Baptist as planned, due to the weather.

Ms Morris added: "I think everyone was pleased. The county RBL were very pleased. I don't think it is something Llanwarne has ever seen and probably won't see again.

"Everyone was very thrilled with the pipes and drums."

She also praised the people who live in Llanwarne for all their help and enthusiasm.

She added: "We are a tiny branch. We continue to punch above our weight in respect of how many people we have in the branch."
