A FORMER Hereford United player has died aged 79.
Eric Tomkins was born in Hereford, a descendent of the Tomkins family that first bred the Hereford Bull.
He attended St James and then Kington Grammar School where his keen interest in football started.
Aged 17, he was selected to play for England's under 21s team, then in 1957 played for Hereford United.
During his football career he had the opportunity to captain a side against Sir Stanley Matthews during a charity match, and also played in the F.A Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday.
Eric, a father of five, moved to Malvern where he became a keen golf player before moving on to Farnborough.
His funeral will be held in Farnborough next week.
