PLANS for a major housing development in Leominster have been unveiled.

A reserved matters application for 414 homes at Barons Cross Camp has been submitted to Herefordshire Council by Keepmoat Homes.

Originally the site of a US military hospital during the Second World War, the site was later used as a farm but has been unused since the late 1990s.

It is not the first time developers have targeted the brownfield site but previous plans have never come to fruition.

The scheme would include a total of 414 homes, including 311 for private sale, 54 for affordable rent and 49 dwellings for shared ownership accommodation.

It would be built in six phases and comprise a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroomed homes. The developer states there would be skilled and trade jobs as well as local supplier and contractor benefits arising from the construction of the site.

A Design and Access Statement, accompanying the application on Herefordshire Council's website, states: "Appropriate levels of provision for vehicle parking have been made when considering the sites sustainable location and good public transport connections.

"The development makes appropriate services provision and will not increase the risk of flooding in the area. The development will have no adverse impact on any features or species of ecological importance.

"The proposals will result in the maximum and efficient reuse of a previously developed site in a sustainable location."

The development also aims to provide, according to the report, new vehicular access from Cholstrey Road via a new roundabout, which will also improve access to Buckfield Road and a new pedestrian route linking the south west edge of the site to the existing linear park and route to town to the north east.

It also outlines a potential new bus route through the site and a central open space with a play area.

Councillor Felicity Norman, whose Leominster ward the development falls into, said she would be meeting with the planning officer to look further at the plans.

She said she would be particularly interested in looking at the quality of the housing proposed as well as sustainable transport methods, with Baron's Cross Road and Bargates already some of the busiest in the town.
