A HUSBAND celebrating 60 years of marriage to his wife this week has some prudent advice for young couples – be honest, be loyal and never go to sleep on an argument.

Peter Williams says it did not take long for his relationship with Christine to blossom – the pair realised they were in love with each other after just one date.

They met in High Town, Hereford, aged just 15 when Peter spotted his future wife getting off a bus.

He said: "I was with my mate in the queue for the cinema and these two girls got off the bus and I said to him 'there's two nice girls getting off the bus'. So we went over and introduced ourselves to them.

"I was talking to Christine and my mate was talking to the other girl."

They arranged to meet for fish and chips the following evening – and have stayed together since.

Peter said: "We started talking and we fell in love that moment. We never looked back."

The couple courted for two years before Peter asked Christine to be his wife and, two years later, aged 19, they married in the Moravian Church in Christine's home town of Leominster on August 10.

They lived in Hereford together for the first six months of marriage but then moved to Leominster, where Peter took up a job at Dimarcos fish shop and remained there for 14 years.

However, he was forced to take time out from work after suffering a heart attack aged 29. The couple later opened the Grill Bar on Leominster's High Street, employing five members of staff and opening seven days a week between 8am and 8pm.

After 25 years they sold up and took some time out before they both went to work at the town's bingo hall.

The couple, both 79, have five children, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren who will all be there to help them celebrate their anniversary this weekend.

Peter said: "We have always been honest with each other, always been loyal and the most important advice in in life is to never go to sleep at night if you have had a little argument.

"Always kiss and make up before you go to sleep because you never know if you are going to wake up in the morning. It's been a lovely life we have had."
