PRIME Minister Theresa May has congratulated the county's pupils on their A Level results during a visit to an outdoor education centre near Hay-on-Wye this morning.

Mrs May visited Woodlands Outdoor Education Centre in Glasbury when she met A Level students who had just received their results.

She was in the area promoting a new National Citizen Service course which aims to raise awareness of mental health among young people and improve their knowledge of how to get help.

Mrs May took time to talk to students at the outdoor centre and hear their experiences of the activities.

Speaking to the Hereford Times she said: "Congratulations to young people today, I know many as I have met some here today have got their grades for their university place and that's the start of the next stage of life.

"Congratulations to all of them for the hard work they have put in for their A Levels.

"What we see in universities now is more young people going to university and I think having that opportunity is important.

"What we also see which I'm particularly interested in is more students from more disadvantaged backgrounds going to university today.

"I think that's hugely important."
