A HEAD for heights was needed but the reward was a tremendous view over Tenbury and the surrounding area.

A giant crane dominated the skyline over Tenbury as engineers examined chimneys at Kerry Ingredients - one of the largest employers in the area.

It was not a job for people that do not have a good head for heights but the view from on high would have taken in five counties - Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Powys.

But despite the height of the crane the historic wireless masts at Woofferton that is home to the last remaining short wave radio station in the the UK.

The worker looking at the masts at would have been viewing an important piece of history as they were used during the Cold War by the ‘Voice of America’ radio station to broadcast to the Eastern Block. Broadcasts started with the words: ‘This is the Voice of America from Woofferton.’
