LEDBURY Food Bank is out to tackle malnutrition among the elderly, because that age group may have needs which are not always being met.

Problems to be overcome include misguided pride, which means that some senior citizens in need are reluctant to visit the food bank, which is based at St Katherines' Hall, and also the essential need for a balanced diet.

The food bank has commissioned a detailed survey for the over 60’s in the local area "to find out how much that sector of the public knows about its services, and what those who have benefitted from its services think about it".

A Ledbury Food Bank spokesman said: "We are very aware that malnutrition is a problem in that age group, and we can find it difficult to persuade the needy to visit.

"Ledbury Food Bank is one of the few food banks that give out fresh food as cheese, eggs, bread, fruit and fresh vegetables well as tinned or packaged. We feel that enough food is only a part of the problem and that a balanced diet containing fresh food is essential."

The detailed survey has been drawn up by a local post-graduate who has just finished her MSc in an area of Social Sciences.

The spokesman added: "Ledbury Food Bank is well aware that there are many in the area who either need help, or have a faulty perception of the services that it provides. All members of the public are welcome to visit the Food Bank in the opening hours of Wednesday and Friday from 10am to noon.

"Copies of the survey will be available at places such as local surgeries, The Cottage Hospital, social services offices, Age UK, Housing associations, and council offices."
