IN a politically correct but savage age, what could be more refreshing than a show called Politically Incorrect, which celebrates the best-loved songs of the master satirist ,Tom Lehrer?

And the good news is, it’s heading to Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall.

A spokesman said: “American musician, singer-songwriter, satirist and mathematician Tom Lehrer is best known for the pithy, humorous songs he recorded in the 1950s and 1960s.

“Written over 50 years ago, Lehrer’s songs and his irreverent attitude have survived the passage of time, though his satire is now perhaps darker and more politically incorrect than most of today’s wits would risk.”

The spokesman added: “Lehrer’s early work typically dealt with non-topical subject matter and was noted for its black humour. In the 1960s, he produced a number of songs dealing with social and political issues of the day, particularly when he wrote for the US version of the television show That Was the Week That Was.

“In the early 1970s he retired from public performances to devote his time to teaching mathematics and musical theatre. In 2001 he retired completely and this year he celebrated his 90th birthday.”

The spokesman said: “Join pianist, vocalist and all round entertainer Peter Gill in a wonderful performance at Huntingdon Hall, reliving the golden days of cutting satire to hear such gems as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, I Got it from Agnes, The Masochism Tango, I Hold Your Hand in Mine, Pollution and Smut.

Lehrer’s songs have truly stood the test of time.”

The date for the diary is Thursday May 31 at 7.30pm.
