LEDBURY Swifts will be holding an Under 7 Football Festival this Saturday (May 19), to raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a charity that is very close to the club's heart.

This is because a player for the Under 7's, Harvey Brace, has just undergone treatment for leukaemia.

The festival will also be a tribute to a former Swifts player, Macca Davies, aged 18, who died in March when his Renault Clio and an Iveco truck collided on the A4103 at Storridge.

The driver of the lorry, a man in his 30s, was arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Club chairman, Nick Fish said: "Harvey Brace plays for Ledbury Swifts and has recently undergone treatment for leukaemia and we would like to raise some money for the hospital that treated him throughout his illness.

"Both his dad Matt and uncle Liam are football coaches for this age group at Ledbury Swifts are they are helping organise the event to help young children who also need treatment in the future, and to help give the support and care that Harvey has had."

On the same day, the Macca Thomas James Davies Memorial Trophy will be contested.

Mr Fish said: "In the afternoon there will be a memorial match for Macca Thomas Davies who played for us for twelve years, and who died following a car accident eight weeks ago.

"There will be a raffle throughout the day and refreshments and we are not charging any admission to the matches but asking for donations. All money raised on the day will be split evenly between Birmingham Children's Hospital and the charity of choice from the family of Macca Davies."

Friends of Mr Davies said the former student at John Masefield High School was "a wonderful, caring, warm hearted, and kind young man".

The venue for the soccer festival will be the Ross Road playing fields
