THE countdown is on to the Ledbury in Bloom judging day, with the green-fingered volunteers hoping to earn the town its twelfth RHS gold medal in row.

But more volunteers are needed.

Ledbury in Bloom Chairman Clive Gunn said.“Spring has sprung and Ledbury is starting to bloom.

“Our volunteers have been busy all over town; I hope that people have noticed the difference. I am particularly proud that so much has been done by so few people, but I hope that more will help out in the final seven weeks.”

The volunteers have transformed the area in Queen’s Walk previously occupied by a line of dangerous trees; they have completely replanted 36 tubs in the main roads in town and transformed the beds at railway station.

Mr Gunn added: "I am particularly pleased with the last project as most of the plants were supplied by the Home Schooling Group, left over from their triumphant display at the Malvern Spring Show with the rest of the plants that have overwintered in and around town.”

All the hard work over the winter is coming to fruition as pruned perennials have responded to the treatment.

Mr Gunn said: “I know that the people of Ledbury would want me to thank everyone who has been involved in the ongoing refurbishment of the roundabouts.”

There are, however, some problems ahead. The first is the number of weeds that are sprouting up alongside the pavements on the main roads.

Mr Gunn added: "I appeal to everyone to tackle a small stretch with a few friends or neighbours. Have a weed pulling party and send me your before and after pictures. The lads from the Bromyard Road car wash have started the ball rolling.

"We would also like to take the judges off the main roads as we did so successfully last year. Are you proud of your road, close or neighbourhood then let us know.”

One fresh problem is the recent news that scaffolding will be erected around the main building on Ledbury Park at the Top Cross in June and July.

Mr Gunn said: “They have to move our long troughs for health and safety reasons, which we appreciate, but the timing is a blow to the visual impact that these troughs have on our major town crossroads."
