HAVE you heard the one about the two comedians from Leominster?

Well listen out for one Herbert Clunkerdunk, a wacky character brought to the small screen by a team including TV producer David Simpson and stand up comic Joe Davies, both of whom are considered among the most “vibrant minds” working in British comedy today.

Thirtysomethings, David, who hails from Orleton, and Joe, a former Minster school pupil, are both involved in a new comedy short for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two.

Both living and working in London, the two men had never met before but their Herefordshire roots have brought them together.

David has produced a new comedy pilot, The Mind of Herbert Clunkerdunk, written and created by BAFTA and Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Spencer Jones, and Joe has a small acting role in the production.

“I heard that Joe was from the same part of the world as me,” says David, a former pupil at Moor Park school at Richards Castle.

He said that the stand-up comedian uses gags in his act inspired by life in Leominster.

Both have worked on The Mind of Herbert Clunkerdunk, one of four new comedies for BBC Two’s ‘New on Two’ strand.

The subject in question is described as a man constantly interrupted by his own imagination.

The BBC explains: “Herbert has a big audition. It’s his big chance to finally break out and we follow him as he wakes up, gets ready, gets the all-important call from his agent and begins to learn his lines and rehearse.”

The short stars Herbert Clunkerdunk’s creator, Spencer Jones, who reprises his role as the character of ‘The Herbert’ which he has portrayed in various TV appearances and live shows. The episode is produced by David for Tiger Aspect Productions.

The four shorts are now published on BBC iPlayer and will be shown on BBC Two at a later date.

BBC commissioner Shane Allen says the New on Two comedy strand has been “extremely fruitful”, a vital place to offer established talent full creative freedom.

“We’ve assembled four really eclectic and beautifully formed pieces from some of the most vibrant minds working in British comedy today,” he added.
