Applications are now open for five new magistrates to sit on the Herefordshire bench.

The voluntary positions are based at the Justice Centre on Bath Street in Hereford.

Magistrates, also known as Justices of the Peace, usually sit as benches of three to deal with a range of minor cases such as theft and motoring offences.

Applications are invited from anyone between 18 and 65 who can demonstrate good character, reliability and their commitment to serving the community. A sense of fairness and an understanding of social issues is also desirable.

Before making an application, prospective applicants are advised to visit the Justice Centre at least three times to see the magistrate at work.

Legal qualifications are not required as full training is provided and a legal advisor in court will ensure procedure is followed.
