Mel Sloanes shares why she’s enjoyed being a Sky Home Service Installer for 13 years

Name: Mel Sloanes

Job title: Home Service Installer

What area of Sky do you work in and what do you do on a daily basis?

I’m a Home Service Installer based in the Newcastle area and have been in my role for 13 years. A typical day for me would be visiting customers who are booked in for Sky classic, Sky Q, or home move installations. Once I’ve completed the installation I’ll show our customers how it all works, answer any questions that they may have, and overall I make sure that our customers are happy with their setup.

I’m very much a people person and love building a rapport with different customers. I’ve met some really interesting customers and had great chats whilst working in their home. When I see customers happy it makes me happy, and that's the way I like my days. I also enjoy the physical side to the job as it saves me going to the gym.

How did you get into your role?

About 13 years ago I saw a great advert in the newspaper; I’d never done anything technical before but always preferred more physical jobs, and the role ticked all of the boxes for me. Working here has been the best career move I ever made.

How do you get help on a job if you need it?

I send a message out on our internal social network group; this is what we all use to communicate. I can also send someone a message privately if I think they can help.

How have you made a difference in your role/what’s been your proudest moment working here?

I was recently given the opportunity to help some of our new Installers who may be struggling in certain areas. I was able to spend a couple of weeks with them giving them hints and tips to help their day go smoother which was really great.

My proudest moment was being presented with my 10-year service certificate.

What surprised you most about your role?

The great level of service that we offer to customers, it’s all about the customer.

Describe your work/life balance:

My work/life balance has always been great here. For example, having a year’s rota makes it really easy for me to plan my time. I also have the flexibility to work longer hours so that I have more days off, and if I have any unexpected emergencies my Manager is always very supportive.

Have you had the opportunity to progress? What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career?

As a Home Service Installer, I’ve enjoyed being the face of Sky for our customers. Because of personal choice, I haven’t progressed in terms of promotion but I’ve built a great portfolio through the numerous projects that I’ve been involved in. I’m also moving into our Broadband Tech team so watch this space as there’s lots of room for progression in Home Service.

Your top application tip for people applying now:

You’ll do well if you’re very passionate about customers and believe in yourself.

An interesting fact no one else knows about you:

I used to be an 18/30 rep in Ibiza.
