AN animal welfare group delivered a peaceful protest outside a city centre supermarket.
Protesters from the group VIVA demonstrated outside Tesco on Bewell Street on August 7 to protest against the store using Hogwood pig farm as suppliers for some of their products.
The demonstration was part of a week of national protests organised by the group calling on the supermarket giant to stop using the supplier, who have been accused of mistreating their pigs.
VIVA released footage last year which appeared to show pigs at the farm living in overcrowded conditions.
The protesters handed out leaflets and encouraged shoppers to sign a petition to the CEO of Tesco calling on the supermarket to stop using Hogwood as a supplier.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We take all concerns extremely seriously and therefore have immediately launched a full and thorough investigation following this video footage. Animal welfare is a priority to us, and with the RSPCA, government approved vets and Red Tractor we regularly inspect all the farms used by our suppliers to ensure they meet the highest standards.”
