ONION Fever will hit the Gloucestershire town of Newent again this weekend, as the famous annual Onion Fayre returns with eye-watering expectations for the size of the crowd.

A spokesman said: "We expect 15,000 or more visitors to attend this, the largest free one-day event in Gloucestershire.

"This is our 23rd consecutive year and the fayre will be opened by two mystery TV celebrities - but the clues are, they have achieved a No1 in the UK singles charts, appeared on Celebrity Master Chef and they can sing and skate."

The fayre opens at 10.45am, this Saturday, September 8, and boasts a nationally famous onion-eating competition, onion show with giant onions, a food village, three music stages, a Funion Zone for children and families and 150 stalls.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve introduced many new and exciting attractions which have proved to be huge hits,” said Andy Offord, Newent Onion Fayre committee chairman. “We’re always keen to evolve and develop the Fayre and bring something new each year – but of course, we don’t leave out the old favourites!”

Bands will include Who’s Next, The Roving Crows and The Hawthorns.

Mr Offord added: "We’re excited to introduce a craft village to the fayre this year, where visitors can discover a fabulous collection of arts and crafts stalls."

The onion fayre can trace its origins back to from the 13th century but it was re-established in 1996, after a lapse.

Mr Offord said: “We have entertainment and attractions spread throughout the town centre and around the lake area. There really is something for everyone at the Newent Onion Fayre and we can’t wait to welcome everyone on Saturday!”
