REPRESENTATIVES of Ledbury Royal British Legion recently travelled out to France and Belgium to remember the fallen and to mark a similar pilgrimage, some ninety years ago this year.

In 1928 the British Legion organised a pilgrimage for war veterans and for all those who lost loved ones during the First World War.

Approximately 11,000 people travelled to France and Belgium to visit battlefields and cemeteries and to march through the recently completed Menin Gate honouring those comrades, husbands, fathers, sons and brothers who paid the ultimate price.

Nine decades later, more than 2000 Legion members "retraced their steps and visited the same battlefields and cemeteries to remember those from their communities who lost their lives in the cause of freedom and justice".

On August 8, 1113 Legion Branches and their 2226 representatives marched with their Branch Standards and wreaths along the same route that the 1928 pilgrims marched.

Amongst these were Ledbury and District RBL Chairman Ian Stephens and Vice-Chairman Mike Stephens.

Mr Stephens said that “The highlight for me was seeing the over a thousand standards marching past and all the wreaths piled up at the Menin Gate”
