AN Army dog handler from Ledbury is currently on a tour of duty in Afghanistan, having already served in Iraq where she was wounded by a hand grenade.
Lance Corporal Deborah Caffull, aged 24 said she is now only too aware of the terrible risks.
She said: "I was in Iraq during November last year, out on hearts and minds project, when a grenade was thrown into the vehicle.
"Four of us were wounded. I took shrapnel in my hand, arm and leg. Amazingly, the dog was untouched."
She added: "I had to have an operation on my hand at the Military Hospital in Iraq and then flew home."
Now in Afghanistan, Deborah is working alongside her liver and white springer spaniel, Pip, in the constant search for arms and explosives.
She works alongside infantry troops from B Company, 5 SCOTS, often in a hot and dangerous environment.
She said: "Pip has an amazingly sensitive nose. He can search a vehicle far quicker than any human. I trust Pip and he trusts me.
"If we can find stuff before it is planted or used, then we are helping to keep the town safe."
Deborah is currently based in the town of Lashkar Gah, the capital of war-torn Helmund Province.
Pip is proving his worth in not only finding explosives but in helping to win hearts and minds, particularly among the young.
Deborah said: "I think it is fascination from the kids. They are constantly asking questions, such as the name of the dog. they are just interested in what I am doing."
The children are also keen to receive free gifts of pens from Deborah.
