THE decision of a government planning inspector will decide the future of a group of Romany gypsies in Newent.
The group of six families, which owns land on Southend Lane in Newent, want to adapt the site and make it into a place they can call home and earlier this year they started constructing hard standing for their caravans and installing septic tanks.
They did not have planning permission for these changes and following a campaign by local residents, Forest of Dean District Council’s planning department issued an enforcement notice which required them to return the field to its original state.
The enforcement notice was due to come into effect yesterday (Thursday July 2) but a day earlier an appeal was lodged with the government planning inspectorate that effectively stalls any further action.
