NEW leaders are needed to help get scouting in Ledbury back up to strength.
The town currently has thriving Cubs and Explorers groups, but does not have the adults to take charge of a Scout group, despite plenty of enthusiasm from the town’s youngsters.
Scouting has a strong history in Ledbury, and the 1st Ledbury group celebrated its 90th anniversary earlier this year.
However the group’s scout section first closed its doors about 18 months ago. It then re-opened in September 2008, but had to close again this summer when work commitments robbed it of its leader.
Derek Barnes, district commissioner for the Malverns, said someone had expressed an interest in becoming a leader, and that he hopes Scouts will be able to re-start in the new year.
But he would also like to hear from anyone else interested in stepping forward and helping to give scouting in the area a boost.
“There is absolutely no shortage of enthusiasm from young people in Ledbury,” he said. “In the last couple of years Scouting in the district has seen numbers grow by about 20 per cent.
“But Ledbury is probably the biggest problem we have at the moment. A town like this should really have a couple of groups, but we seem to be struggling to keep it going.”
Mr Barnes added that there were also ongoing efforts to start a Beaver colony in Ledbury, and that to date four volunteers have indicated an interest but no leader.
Enthusiasm is a must for anyone interested in volunteering but no qualifications are needed as full training is provided. Anyone interested should call Mr Barnes on 0844 4142951 or Robert Schofield on 01531 632279.
