More people needed for country and western evenings

A LEDBURY couple who have raised some £90,000 for charity in the last 31 years are urging supporters to turn out for their country and western music nights after numbers dropped.

Ian and Jean Wheeler, who live in Lower Road, put on the nights regularly in Rushall Social Club near Much Marcle, a former barn widely known as the Cowshed.

They have raised money for various causes over the years, but the main beneficiaries now are Acorns Children's Hospice, St Michael's Hospice and the Midlands Air Ambulance.

Mr Wheeler said he and his wife still enjoyed organising the music nights, but urged local people to support the events.

"We used to get round about 80 people a night easily, but now we're lucky if we're getting 40," said Mr Wheeler. "The trouble is that a lot of people aren't getting any younger, and the younger people are not really getting into this type of music. We could do with more supporters so that we can continue raising money for these good causes."

The next music nights are on Saturday, December 5 and Saturday, December 12. There will also be a New Year's Eve event. Admission is £3 for the regular events and £7.50 for New Year's Eve, which will also feature a buffet. Tickets for the latter are available in advance from the Wheelers on 01531 635682, as well as on the door.
