HEREFORD’S Courtyard Arts Centre will be holding a charity film premiere of the new Alice in Wonderland on Tuesday, March 2.
This will be an early preview of the film which is not yet on general release. The film stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowsky as Alice and brings together an exciting combination of new film techniques to help create the enchanting and magical world of Wonderland.
Directed by Tim Burton the fantasy is about Alice, who has now grown into a young woman, and is enticed once again into a world of mystery and intrigue, a world ruled by the Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter. After being reacquainted with the Mad Hatter Alice learns from a hookah smoking caterpillar (Alan Rickman) that there is an old prophecy that says she, Alice, will bring the reign of the Red Queen to an end.
The preview is being hosted by the Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust, a charity that works to secure funding for the cathedral.
Erica Manley of the Trust said the film should make a fantastic evening out for all the family.
“Many of the caricatures and almost all the sets have been digitally enhanced or created. This gives a real opportunity for Tim Burton, the film’s director, and his team to come up with a truly amazing Wonderland,” she said.
Little Britain star Matt Lucas plays his own double act in the film as both Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
Herefordshire has it’s own links with author Lewis Carroll and the Alice stories - Lewis Carroll’s brother the Reverend Skeffington Dodgson was vicar at Vowchurch and his daughter might have been one of the inspirations for the heroine.
The charity premiere is being sponsored by the Hereford catering firm Flavours and the evening will start with a special Mad Hatters reception at 6.30pm with the film, which is PG rated, being shown at 7.45pm. Tickets for the evening cost £20 with under 16s £15. They can be booked through the Courtyard by calling 01432 340555 or visiting courtyard.org.uk.
