SHOPPERS could be forgiven for thinking Woolworths was back in business - as a new store opened on Ledbury’s Homend.
Wellworth It!, the new venture of local businessman Mark Hatto, threw open its doors on Wednesday morning and soon generated a flurry of interest from curious bargain hunters.
It is on the site of the town’s former Woolworths - which has laid vacant for more than 15-months - and even uses the same iconic red lettering of the now defunct chain.
A similar range of products will be on offer, including household, seasonal and gardening products, and plans are already in place for a major extension which will double the size of the store.
Mr Hatto said: “We had a really good response. At the back of the store there’s a very big stock room and warehouse. We’re taking a wall down so it will be pretty much twize the size it is now.”
It is hoped the extension will be open after Easter and enable the store to stock more garden furniture such as gazebos as well as camping equipment.
Six new jobs have been created by the store, which will eventually be open seven-days a week, and prospective employees are currently being interviewed.
Mr Hatto, managing director Midland Leisure International, also runs stores in Monmouth, Tewkesbury and Witney, in Oxfordshire.
The building had recently been renovated by landlord Roger Allsop.
