WITH many people choosing to take a brisk walk to work off turkey dinners and mince pies it is encouraging to hear the Malvern Hills have been revealed as one of the top 10 winter views in the UK.
The eight-mile ridge secured fourth spot in the poll conducted by Oscaruk.co.uk to find the favourite winter wonderland destinations for a refreshing festive walk among the over-50s, so those reaching the top will be well rewarded. Some 35.1 per cent of the 461 people voted for its beautiful panoramic views.
Mike Soley, chairman of Malvern Hills District Council, hailed the hills as “well worthy” of the accolade and has been making use of them over the holidays.
He said: “It’s absolutely great for the Malvern Hills Conservators and the council, and it’s the truth. The hills are a fantastic attribute and I use them as much as I possibly can with my wife and the family.
“I think it is there for everybody; the walkers, bikers, horse riders and dog walkers. They are iconic and beautiful. Anything like that has can only be a plus for us and the tourism in Malvern.”
Lake Windermere, in Cumbria, topped the poll and was followed in second and third by St Ives Harbour, in Cornwall, and Bamburgh Castle and the Northumberland coastline. The Malvern Hills beat the likes of Hadrian’s Wall and Stonehenge at sunset in securing the top-five slot.
